RugRacers 2011 - Team Corally/Modeltech driver Mark Fuller takes TQ and overall win!
Round one of one of the premier UK winter indoor carpet championships, the Rug Racers Winter Series was to be the first outing for the PHi/09 with the Modeltech gear diff conversion. The car ran faultlessly and team driver Mark Fuller took the FTQ in Q3 by 3secs, then following further setup changes took another 3.7secs off it in Q4. With the finals results the overall win went to Mark.
Open practice was used to scrub-in the new control tyres (Sweep) and check out the setup and how the diff was performing. After scrubbing-in the tyres, Corally TC4-Carpet Jack, was used to treat the tyres ready for the first run.
Q1: set-up as per EWS set-up sheet that we developed last indoor season. Car was good but had too much steering.
Q2: slight change to set-up, dropped 1 tooth on pinion to 5.5 overall, changed the tyre prep to cleaning, then leaving additive until 20 mins before run, with only half fronts left for 15 mins, then wiped down and left to dry. Car was much better but still not quite there.
Q3: tyre prep repeated, raised ride heights slightly and changed droop, fitted stiffer front roll bar - result: TQ by 3secs.
Q4: tyre prep repeated but now 15 mins before and splash and dash method, upped the front spring rate by one and changed back to the original roll bar size - result TQ again imptoved by 3.7secs to set FTQ by 6+ secs!
After Q4, Mark said the tyres felt like they were going off, having lost some of their "finess", car felt like it was moving around more towards the end of the run, after checking the tyres, they felt thinner and had more sideways movement across the rim. New tyres were needed but with no way to break them in, this was a no-no! Changed the tyre prep, to cleaning only, no additive as the carpet was now covered in additive and the tyres were picking it up on track.
F1: result - 1st. Car was handling well, but tyres were now past their best, starting to squirm under load in the later part of the run.
F2: result - 2nd. Car was a handful, tyres now clearly past their best so elected not to fight for position as 2nd would give the outright win. Brilliant and intelligent drive by Mark - 1st place overall.
Car Spec:
Car: Team Corally RDX Phi/09, narrow chassis, straight arms, rear mounted shocks. Motor: Team Corally Pro/RED Brushless - same motor as used all season in the STCC onroad season! Speedo: Black Diamond (with turbo timing disabled) Battery: Modeltech 6000/75C
